Getting started with Personal Training

Getting Started – the first 8 weeks

There’s no two ways about it, if you’re out of shape, getting started with exercise and fitness can be difficult. It can feel like the Further you are away from being at the fitness level and body size you desire, the bigger the mountain to climb.

There are some important guidelines for the first few months that you exercise to help you stay safe and motivated when you being your fitness journey.

Taking a small step in the right direction is the start

You should congratulate yourself on taking any steps in the right direction, no matter how small as progress is progress. When starting a programme there are three variables for exercise that determine how likely it is that you get injured, so it’s best to pay attention to them and ensure you’re being conservative and minimising the risk of injury.

  • Weight (of your body, or the thing you are using)
  • Speed (of movement)
  • Duration (for each exercise and overall workout)

Training & Personal Training considerations

Weight – Body weight exercises can be quite intense when you start off, especially if you have weight to lose* so you should be conservative with things like boot-camps and yoga, swimming (with your weight supported) and walking (slow speed) are lower impact and better to start with.

Speed of movement – People typically get injured when they move too quickly, this can be things like sprinting and getting up or down too fast at a class. Slower things like Pilates, swimming, walking and controlled weight training put a lower strain in on the body and are therefore better to begin with.

Duration – When you’re not used to training, shorter workouts are better, to give your body, joints and ligaments chance to adapt to your new training regime. You do not need to train ‘hard’ to begin getting this benefit, and research suggests that training to 50% of your capability will deliver broadly the same results as harder training for the first few months.
